3. Rothesay Terrace,

Barra's Road. 353 Coventry Dec 27th 194...

I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your letter No. 25574/ of the 21st inst. informing me that as I had "voluntarily resigned my position in Hong Kong I have no claim to a retiring allowance.

I wish respectfully to draw attention to the fact that my action was in no way voluntary nor did I expect it would be so regarded.

My medical adviser had informed me that I should almost inevitably "lose ... one ... if I returned to the Colony ... I had no course open to me but to make the statement that appeared in my letter of Sept. 7th which was merely intended to point out my inability to comply with the instructions I had received that I should resume my duties in November.

I therefore earnestly hope that as my health has been destroyed in the service of Government of Hong Kong a mere defect in the wording of my letter may not be considered sufficient cause to prevent me from obtaining the retiring allowance to which I should otherwise have been entitled.

Trusting that the matter may be favourably reconsidered

I have the honour to be, Sir,

Your obedient servant

R.M. Jameson.

H. M. Undersecretary of State for the Colonies.
